Ever despair of plowing through those hefty car user manuals? Audi R8 has the longest, spread over 308 pages and requiring over 43 hours to read

Ever despair of plowing your way through those hefty car user manuals?

Analysis of nearly 100 manuals by Scrap Car Comparison found the Audi R8 has the longest with 616,064 words spread over 308 pages requiring an eye-watering 43 hours and 9 minutes to read.

For example, with a manual like this one, you should expect that all of the Audi parts are explained in detail, including maintenance parts and accessories.

That’s 28,000 words and two hours more reading time than is required for War And Peace and just under three hours more reading time for the entire Lord of The Rings book series (including the Hobbit) at 576,45 words and 40 hours 22 minutes.

Indeed, Audi dominates the top ten models with the longest manuals, with the R8, e-tron, and A3 models each taking more than 12 hours to read. Volvo’s XC40 takes 12 hours, VW ID.4 11 hours 46 minutes, and a Ford Focus 11 hours 25 minutes.

By contrast, Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code takes nine hours 37 minutes to read, Moby Dick 6 hours 37 minutes, Pride and Prejudice 5 hours 50 minutes, and JK Rowling’s ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ 5 hours 23 minutes.

Researchers said the average manual length stands at 109,106 words.

Scrap Car Comparison said their research took word counts from each manual and used the average English silent reading speed of 238 words per minute to reach the results.

The most difficult-to-read manual was that of the McLaren 765LT followed by the Vauxhall Crossland X and the BMW 2 Series,    while that of the Tesla Model Y was deemed the easiest.

Dan Gick, managing director at Scrap Car Comparison said: ‘Though most car manuals do not have the same appeal of a good beach read, it’s been fascinating to reveal from our research just how long these manuals take to read from cover to cover.

‘And while some seem to get it right in terms of reading length and accessibility, other manufacturers may need to think about whether they’re making their manuals overly complex.

‘However ultimately, no matter how long – or seemingly boring – your vehicle’s manual may appear, it’s important to familiarise yourself with its contents. If not, you risk your vehicle becoming unsafe or falling into disrepair, which could lead to a premature trip to the scrap heap.’
